The Opportunist by Tarryn FisherMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Oh god, I really loved the book! Like really loved the book. After finishing the book, I was left thinking “Why on Earth did I wait to read the book?!” . Seriously, if you haven’t read the book yet, stop whatever you’re doing and read the book! It’s just that great!
Okay, back to the book. It was a story that revolves around three lives. It was a story of Olivia Kaspen, Caleb Drake and Leah Smith. Three different individuals, fighting for one love.
“Life is all about choices, I decide—good ones, bad ones, selfish ones” - Olivia
The story starts with Olivia’s decision to steal back what used to be hers, Caleb, from Leah.
And, did I mention that when she fights, she fights dirty?
She regretted the break-up and all the ugly things she used to have with Caleb.
“I was a relationship retard. I kicked, shoved, and punched people out of my life, so they never had a chance to hurt me.” – Olivia
“I loved you enough to put aside every one of my feelings to accommodate yours. What did I get in return? Coldness and emotional detachment. You are selfish and bitter and you wouldn’t know a good thing if it fell out of the sky at your feet.” – Caleb
In the past, Caleb did something horrible that hurt her badly, and she made him pay for it.
“I knew what I was going to do, something that would hurt him more than he hurt me. That’s the way I fought, dirty. An eye for an eye.” – Olivia
“I will love again, Olivia, you will hurt forever. What you’ve done is…You are worthless because you make yourself that way. You will remember me every day for the rest of your life because I was the one and you threw me away.” - Caleb
She met him by chance years after their break-up. He had lost his memory.
So just like the opportunist she was, she took advantage of the situation and paved her way into his life again, pretending to be a stranger he never knew.
“I am so good at pretending, that sometimes I lose track of who I really am.” - Olivia
Everything went well until Leah made her move. Olivia's second chance was snatched from her hands right away.
“That’s it! I decide. I am leaving and I’m never coming back.” - Olivia
That’s how Olivia lost Caleb for the second time. No matter how much she wanted Caleb, he was Leah’s because she lost him years ago during their break up.
She moved on but everything was a pretence. But it did not matter that she was unhappy because it was like…
“…stuff something into your heart quickly to stop it from cracking open…from bleeding out...” - Cammie
But her path crossed his again years later.
She still loved Caleb and she still hated Leah.
Caleb blamed her for leaving the second time when everything was Leah’s deed. She needed to tell him the truth, but…
“…are you willing to put him through the whirlwind for a broken dream?” – Noah
Olivia met Noah on her third mission on stealing Caleb’s back from Leah’s grasp. He taught her things she never knew.
“Prove to yourself that you are capable of something selfless.” – Noah
She learned that…
“There is more to loving someone than just making yourself happy. You have to want him to be happier than you are.” - Noah
In the end, the truth floated to the surface.
“I think that after the first time you give your heart away, you never get it back. The rest of your life is just you pretending that you still have a heart.” - Noah
“I am a victor in a way—a survivor. Because I fought the monster in myself and I won. But what have I lost in the process?” - Olivi
English physician Maria Bennet (Watts), her Scottish husband Henry (McGregor) and their sons Lucas (Holland), Tomas and Simon are on Christmas holiday in Khao Lak, Thailand, in 2004. The tsunami triggered by that year's Indian Ocean earthquake floods the area with overwhelming destructive power.
Maria and Lucas are swept away from the others by the tsunami and barely survive; Maria is severely injured but they find a displaced toddler named Daniel in the wreckage. They are later found by locals who transfer them to a local hospital where Maria encourages Lucas to occupy himself assisting in any way he can, which leads to him searching for various strangers for their relatives at the facility. Due to a mix-up, the hospital staff believes she has died and takes Lucas to a tent where children without families are being held. Maria has surgery on her injured chest and is mistakenly labeled as someone else; She is eventually reunited with Lucas, but remains in a highly fragile medical state waiting to deemed fit for further surgery on her leg wound.
Elsewhere, Henry, Tomas and Simon had survived the tsunami themselves together, although the father is injured. Henry places the children into a vehicle supposed to take tourists to a safe place while he remains behind to search for Maria and Lucas. Ultimately further injured while failing to find them, he arrives at the evacuation point, only to discover that Tomas and Simon have been sent elsewhere. Communication facilities are scarce, but a tourist named Karl, who was also separated from his family by the tsunami, lends Henry his cell phone to contact his relatives and volunteers to accompany Henry to look for Maria and Lucas.
Henry and Karl search for their families in various places before they arrive at the hospital where Maria and Lucas are. The vehicle carrying Tomas and Simon stops outside the hospital; the family eventually reunites. Maria has surgery which she survives and the following day the family boards an ambulance airplane to Singapore arranged by their insurance company for further treatment for Maria.
